Keeping your cool naturally with these top chilling foods

Posted by Alexandra on June 29, 2009 at 10:50 pm

Living in New York City can be tough on a girl’s hair in the summer. Humidity, heat and shvitzing not only make my ‘do a frizzy mess, but I get cranky, tired and crave cool things to help me get relief.

Rather than reaching for the bucket of ice cream, an expensive iced soy latte or a caffeine filled iced tea, try adding in more of nature’s natural coolers throughout your day:

Posted by Alexandra on June 25, 2009 at 7:34 am

A reader wrote to me this week:

I have to tell you that although I haven’t signed up for any of your programs I have been inspired by you and last week I began my transformation.  I decided to cut out meat and eat more veggie/raw, run & go to yoga.  I went to yoga 4 times last week and I plan to do the same this week. Just by changing my diet and going to yoga I’ve lost 8lbs since last monday!

Thank you for all of your inspiration as I continue my journey back to veganism & a healthy lifestyle!

Sincerely,

One easy way to make school lunches healthier!

Posted by Alexandra on at 7:20 am

I live in New York City. It’s an amazing, maddening place to live. There are more health food stores and vegan-friendly restaurants per square mile than anywhere else on earth. Still, we have our health problems, especially in the public schools.

It’s bad enough that public schools offer high-fat, over-salted, artificially sweetened food to kids every day. Did you know they also serve that junk on single-use Styrofoam trays?

I have 2 major issues with using Styrofoam food trays for kids:

1. Health Impact: Styrofoam is known to leach polystyrene and BPA into food. Why does this matter? According to the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), styrene was reported as having a “possible carcinogenic effect to humans.” BPA is a controversial chemical linked to hormone disruption and cancer.

 2. Environmental: According to the New York City public school system, 850,000 of these Styrofoam trays are thrown away every day – after being used for about 30 minutes!

Sign the petition to Mayor Mike Bloomberg (“the green mayor?”) and the City Counsel to request that this crazy system be changed for our kids and the planet’s health: http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/SOSnyc/

Because Styrofoam is cheap, lightweight and easy to use, the school systems began buying them en masse in the early 1990s. According to SOSnyc.org, or Styrofoam Out of Schools NYC, NYC Council Member, Bill DeBlasio, has introduced legislation to ban Styrofoam in NYC restaurants and city agencies (this bill does not cover NYC schools). They are working with his staff on planning a City Hall rally for the fall, 2009.

The alternatives at this point are:

  1. An immediate reduction in Styrofoam tray use. Every kid gets a tray even if they’re only buying a wrapped sandwich and a carton of juice. Why is this necessary? High school kids could handle a plate without a tray, and younger kids don’t all need a tray.
  2. Reusable, washable trays are the best solution. Kids need to learn that living in a throwaway society is no longer an option, and they need to understand the impact of their actions.
  3. Compostable single-use trays are available.
    1. It is safer for the kids to eat off of Bagasse or sugar cane trays, which are available for an additional cost of about .03 each. However, if the trays are not composted, their disposal is similar to other single-use products. Sugar cane is a renewable resource. The fibers being used for the sugar cane trays would be burned, otherwise. Still, the Sunshine trays are shipped from Asia.
    2. Power Tray, LLC is working on a new tray systems that would be made from locally sourced fibers from New York State. For more information, contact:

Be well,

Keep up the good fight,

Mindful Menu Planning 101

Want to save money, eat healthy and save time? Me too! Make your healthy eating goals a reality with a few simple planning tips:

Plan the meals you’re going to eat for the next week – as someone’s football coach once said, if you fail to plan, your planning to fail.

Use a grid printout to make your menu and shopping list. This simple practice will easily cut down on stressful, end of the day grocery store dashes, and will save you from relying on take-out or fast food.

Start with these two printable charts from Organizedhome.com:

How to Lose 2 pounds effortlessly this weekend – healthy style!

Posted by Alexandra on June 19, 2009 at 6:41 am

Summer is upon us – finally! After the last 2 months of near-constant rain here in New York City, I’m really ready to break out my strapless dresses and flip flops. But I also have to get in shape for my upcoming (much deserved) vacation to Hawaii!

Here’s my plan to shed 2 pounds and feel amazing for my tropical trip in the next few days:

1. Go to yoga three (yes, 3!) times in the next week

2. Eat only raw fruits and veggies for 2 meals a day and all snacks

Raw? What? First, more raw food means more fiber to clean out the ol’ tubes. Second, the active enzymes, phytonutrients and vitamins will help your skin look amazing. Finally, I can eat as much raw as I want and still feel amazing and drop any excess bloat that’s hanging around (FYI: writing a book, working with clients and raising a 2.5 year old leads to bizarre snacking habits).

I’m not going totally raw, but now that the summer bounty is filling up the farmer’s market, this 2/3 raw diet will be easier and cheaper. Tons of delicious salad greens, fresh bell peppers, sweet carrots, cucumbers, delicious tomatoes and FRUIT GALORE!

I’ll give myself the gift of truly delicious, fresh food and still allow for one meal a day that will be cooked (but still based on healthy whole foods like grains and beans) – this won’t be hard at all.

Join me and get a little raw this weekend – let me know how you do it and how you feel!

Chicago’s Health Freedom Expo – a wonderful experience!

Posted by Alexandra on June 14, 2009 at 2:19 pm

Attending conferences can be a fantastic or hellish experience. Luckily for me, this weekend’s Health Freedom Expo in Chicagoland’s Shaumburg Renaissance convention center was a delight.

I was honored to speak to a standing-room only crowd on Friday afternoon about my 8 favorite, convenient detox tips. I handed out samples from some of my favorite detox companies, which the attendees ate up! Samples from Klean Kanteen, Topricin, Glad Rags, ZRII, and H. Gillerman Organics were handed out to people who needed them, and I’m really grateful to those companies for providing the freebies.

Saturday was packed with lectures by such health luminaries like Dr. Mercola, Nicholas Perricone, Robert Scott Bell, Charlie Brown, Kevin Trudeau and Brenda Cobb from Atlanta’s Living Food Institute. I had a blast walking down the aisles of the convention hall, eating samples of organic, vegan chocolate and soup from the Vita-mix booth!

The best part of the whole event was getting to meet some of my heros in person and learn from so many of natural health experts and leaders.

Alexandra’s Top 5: drink more water today!

Posted by Alexandra on at 10:27 am

Natural health experts are always encouraging people to drink more water – I’m one of them! Being properly hydrated will give you numerous benefits:

- better energy

- better elimination and digestion

- decreased food cravings

Because we’re all so busy and sometimes forget, here are my top 5 tips to help you drink more water:

1. Drink 2 glasses of water as soon as you wake up in the morning (proven to help many people drink less caffeine as hydration is a natural energy booster)

2. Buy a stainless steel reusable water bottle and carry it with you (my favorite is http://www.kleankanteen.com/)

3. Put a pretty pitcher full of water on your desk or counter with a glass so you are reminded to drink every time you see it

4. Add an electrolyte to your water to increase your hydration and add a little natural flavor (my favorite is www.electroblast.com)

5. Use a high quality water filter at home to reduce impurities, chlorine and improve taste. The yearly cost will be less than buying bottled water and the quality will be better.

6. Drink your water at room temperature. In Traditional Chinese Medicine cold water can “shock” the stomach impeding digestion and decreasing overall chi or your body’s energy.

Here’s to your health!
