Gentle Detox Drink – Takes Minutes, Costs Pennies (and toxin free!)

Posted by Alexandra on May 4, 2010 at 8:05 am

Those store-bought containers of “fiber products” might help with constipation, but they often hide synthetic chemicals which are unnecessary and toxic.

I make this simple, inexpensive drink at home on a regular basis. It takes minutes, and costs pennies!

1 tablespoon freshly ground flax seeds (grind in a spice grinder or clean coffee grinder)

6 ounces water

2 ounces apple or pineapple juice

Simply mix all together with a whisk or in a blender and drink quickly. Because the fiber expands in your intestines, it acts as an internal brush, cleaning out any stuck matter.

  • [...] My recommendation for constipation issues is to stay away from any product that contains synthetic colors and preservatives. Instead, eat a diet of whole grains, beans and legumes, nuts, seeds, fruits and vegetables. Try my favorite Detox Drink recipe seen here. [...]

  • Can we use a blender in place of a coffer grinder or a spice grinder

  • Blenders might work if you pulse the flax seeds. You need to pulverize them into a chunky powder. You could also try a small food processor or a mortar and pestle.

  • Do the ground Flax seeds need to be mixed with the juice to be more effective? I eat hot oat bran cereal with a tablespoon of ground flax seeds daily, but wondered if they would be more effective in juice form.

  • Monica – if your blender is *perfectly dry* it will grind the seeds, but if it’s the least bit wet (damp, even), the seeds will stick to the walls and make a mess. You can grind a few days’ worth and store the powder in the freezer.

  • I find the drink is more effective for constipation. Added to hot cereal is a good daily practice if you’re not having elimination problems.

  • I keep a coffee grinder for things other than coffee: I use it to grind flax when I make my morning shakes (yum), and also grind capsules of cinnamon, psillium (sp?), anything that can go into my shakes. My recipe might offend some, but I find it a low calorie, high fiber way to start the day–8 oz milk, one scoop slim fast (or any meal substitute powder), two tbsp cocoa, one tbsp instant coffee, two tbsp ground flax, two caps cinnamon (ground), one tbsp bulk fiber (generic works), a scoop of ice (probably about 8 oz), and enough water drizzled in to let the blender make a smooth mix. Usually I wind up with about 32 oz, and of course some of it is air from the blender.

The grinder which can be cleaned by “grinding” a piece of bread in it, costs about $10. I bought mine maybe five years ago, and it’s as good as new. The fancier ones don’t seem to last.

  • Should the detox drink be taken on an empty stomach or with the meal? Thanks.
