Summer is almost here, and iced drinks are on the menu.
You may have improved your chillin’ choices lately – maybe you’re avoiding sugary, caffeinated Frappacino-type drinks and opting for iced green tea, lemonade, or herbal concoctions. So you’re doing better, right?
Wait! What about that straw you’re sucking through? Did you know it’s made of petroleum-based plastic? If you scrape your teeth along that straw, changes are you’re ingesting microscopic bits of chemicals as well as dyes, plastic and who-knows-what-else.
The brilliant folks behind Glass Dharma Straws have a beautiful line of eco-friendly straws that you can use every day without worrying about what bits you’re slurping up.
Want to win one of two $25 credits on Glass Dharma’s website? Here’s how you can win:
1. Go to GlassDharma.com, and look around the site.
2. Leave a comment here on this blog about why you want to win a glass straw! Winners will be chosen at random on June 9th, 2010.
Good luck, and happy sucking!

I want to win a glass straw because I am trying to use as many reusable things as possible and I have wanted a reusable straw for the longest time!
I drink at least one smoothie and juice per day, each requiring a plastic straw. This is my last throw-away item, and I’d really like to replace it with something greener!
I’d love to win one of these. My daughter’s a toddler and straws help her, but I hate all the plastic waste they leave. This looks like a great solution!
I have two young daughters and I’m trying to teach them the three R’s….I think this would help. I also think it would help them to drink more water this summer if they had a cool straw to drink through.
I would love to win a glass straw. I’ve been tiring to incorporate drinking more water into my daily routine and I seem to drink more when a keep a straw in my water bottle. I have a reusable water bottle and it would be great to switch to a glass straw and reduce waste.
not only is it a clearly greener way to sip but wow, the fact they’re USA made is a HUGe plus in my book. it sounds like a real win-win to me! also, i’ve been unemployed for 10 months so i can’t afford any extras so i’d love to win something like this so i can be greener when i sip my iced lattes!
I work with a girl who brings in straws to drink out of her water bottles, and it drives me nuts. If I won this, I would buy 2 – one for her and one for myself, to be an example to others.
I would love to win a straw because I love to drink out of straws! About a year ago I stopped drinking out of plastic straws as a started to understand the environmental impacts. I carry a Kleen kanteen around but there are times when I just feel like having a drink of juice with some bubbly water out of a nice glass with a straw!
Thanks for all you do Alex!
I’d love to win these straws, I think it’s a great idea. Straws may not take up the majority of space in a landfill, but all that little crap adds up; then multiply by all the people; and all the days people use stuff; little changes do make a difference. As an added bonus, it’s less plastic junk that’s being made and used and thrown away or that’s going to leach into your body; glass is such a good idea, it’s reusable, recyclable; sustainable; et al. Such a fabulous idea!
I’m totally guilty of one-time plastic straw usage, but I never considered it before reading this post! I inadvertently get orange carrot juice mustaches when I drink my juices without a straw. I put my juice in glass jar with a screw top, and then pack a throw-away straw for embarrassment-free sipping at work. These glass straws would be a great addition to my routine.
I avoid using straws because of the plastic. However, when drinking beverages in the car, straws prevent spills and let you keep your eyes on the road. Without a straw, you have to tilt your head back which decreases and distorts your view of what lies ahead.
It would be great to win these straws. We’ve been re-using the same plastic ones for years (to be green)… and now I’m worried about the ingestion of plastic bits that you mention…
Oh, these are beautiful! What a wonderful way to reduce our trash. I’ll cross my fingers to be chosen.
How pretty! And how practical–this would keep my cat from biting holes in it when I’m not looking.
I have been seeing these all over the internet. They are gorgeous. And what a great conversation starter! I pack my lunch for work everyday, and people are always checking out my reusable items that I bring in. I have my bamboo utensils, & my glass containers for warming my food. I would love a glass straw to complete my ensemble!
Every morning, I drink my Protein Hemp Shake – With a Straw. I’ve been looking for a Eco-Friendly, Healthier alternative – And these glass straws are prefect! Beautiful, Functional, and Non-Toxic!
p.s. Love the Cleaner!
(Pick Me! Pick Me!)
Glass straws-very cool! I want to win them because I love helping the environment in any way possible.
I would love to win the glass straws because I hate the taste of plastic and I am on a really tight budget.
These look great! I’m a new college graduate with a lot to pay back and very tight budget. I’ve been doing everything I can to eat healthy and cheap. These would add the enjoyment of my meals and help protect my partner and his little brother who lives with us. Thanks so much!
I’m not a fan of giveaways. I rarely try for them. However, this time, I’m trying not for me, but for Mother Earth.
See – I’m addicted to drinking out of straws. I put them in my smoothies, my kombooch, my vegetable juices, my coconut water – everything! Currently I carry a box of plastic ones IN MY CAR. That way, I can drink out of straws all of the time.
Sick, I know.
I do clean and recycle my used straws. However, the best thing for the planet would be if I used glass straws. Due to strapped funds, they remain on my wish list.
Hence – why I want to win.
These glass straws are awesome! I love that someone has taken something so wasteful like plastic straws and transformed them into something great. I’m one of those people that hates throwing them away when I’ve only used them once. Yes I admit, I wash my plastic straws and reuse them. Some people think I’m strange, but it makes me feel better to reuse whatever I can…and I think they’re strange! I never even thought about sucking up little bits of plastic when I use them…there’s always something isn’t there!. Now I definitely want some of these glass straws cause I won’t feel right about using my plastic ones anymore and when my daughter gets older, I won’t want her to use them either.
What a fantastic idea! My son used to have some hard plastic reusable straws that he loved using but I had a bad feeling about the plastic and about how well they could really be cleaned and threw them out. He’d love these.
I sit at a desk all day and straws are the way to go to get my hydration. I drink lots of water and smoothies. I try to consider the breakdown of petroleum based products into my food and drinks. Particularly since I drink distilled water and it can leech the petroleum out of plastic. Glass is much better for the environment too.
Great idea! I have a 7-year-old who uses straws at home. She would LOVE these as she is always reminding us to “go green”!!
The website says they’re made of the same material used to manufacture Pyrex – borosilicate glass – but Pyrex is not indestructable. Glass straws and children worries me. I would opt for stainless steel instead. I have some and they’re great.
I got mine at a store nearby, but they are also sold online:

Glass straws are such a great idea! I just can’t wait to try them!
Ooh….I have wanted these for a while now & would love to win. I make a green smoothie every day loaded with spinach, cherries, chia seeds, banana & almond milk…and it must be consumed with a straw. I use plastic ones right now (boo)
