Gluten Free? Win this book! Flying Apron’s Gluten-Free & Vegan Baking Book!

Posted by Alexandra on February 1, 2010 at 7:57 pm

We all have our gurus, mentors and people we look up to.

Mine is my friend Annie. When Annie says “Here, read this!” I read it!

Annie showed me a copy of Jennifer Katzinger’s

Flying Apron’s Gluten-Free & Vegan Baking Book and I could hardly believe my eyes. Katzinger, owner of the Flying Apron Bakery in Seattle, has written a lovely, workable, informative cookbook. Every recipe makes sense. They work! And there aren’t a lot of confusing ingredients and steps. This is a fabulous book for beginners and experienced chefs alike.

Everything from pizza crusts, cookies, cupcakes, pies, cakes, maple bars (my personal favorite!), tarts, pastries and breads are covered in this handy, pretty book. I give this book 5 STARS!

The good people at Sasquatch Books have given me a few copies to give away to my readers! Leave your comment here about why you would love to receive a copy of this book by this Friday the 5th of February.

Enjoy,

Alexandra

  • I would absolutely LOVE a copy of this book to help me start my Gluten-Free Vegan Experiment! I’m have a wheat and gluten intolerance, and after being vegetarian off-and-on over the past few years, I’ve decided to go vegan! After all the research I did into the production of animal food products and industrial food in general, I just couldn’t “un-know” or “un-see.”

  • Really looking forward to this book! I bake gluten-free whenever I can, but it’s tough to find vegan recipes that are actually tasty. It will be so gratifying to have a full selection where I can pick and choose!

  • I know that any recipe you post or recommend are winners! I’ve tried some of your recipes and they are wonderful! I can only imagine how great this book would be if you are suggesting it. I love simple, common food recipes for beginners, and a concern for vegetarian and gluten-free cuisine for family and friends. I would love to get a copy of this book!

  • I am excited for this new journey in my life, as I just began schooling at IIN yesterday. My extended family has a tremendous baking habit and if I could gently expose them to a healthier way… I would love to be gifted a copy of the Cookbook!

Peace and thanks for all you do!

  • I would love a copy of this book! I have been gluten free (after a very tenacious road to finding out I was allergic to wheat) since 2003 and I am “leaning into” a vegan lifestyle. It is very difficult to find books that compliment both. Veggie cookbooks that I have searched are full of recipes that deal with flour in some respects- and not the gluten free kind. Whether it be for veg pizzas or soup thickeners.. flour is everywhere! I would absolutely LOVE a copy of this book!

  • I would love this book. My son has been gluten free for six years now, since he was almost 3. I’m always looking for inspiration, especially with baked goods. His birthday is coming up on April 5th and I knew he’d love it if I could find a fabulous recipe that would rival a wheat based product.

  • I was just recently diagnosed with celiac disease. I’ve been vegetarian for a few years now, and had only recently decided to go vegan. This book will be an enormously helpful resource!

  • I’d love a copy of the book. I’ve been trying to go back to vegetarian, if not vegan, and the doctor has told me my migraines are a direct result of my diet–gluten and dairy–which has also caused a lot inflammation and weight gain. This would be an awesome cookbook to have so I could really learn to cook for myself gluten-free, taking the guess work out of how to do it.

  • This cookbook sounds right up my alley. Gluten free is something I am intrested in, yet the receipes seem a bit intimidating. I believe in a vegetarian lifestyle, and love vegan receipes. Thank you for your website, and sending out healthy information.

  • I would love to win this fabulous cookbook since I am gluten-intolerant and this looks like an incredibly beautiful and well written healthy cookbook that I would love to share with my clients, blog readers, family and friends! I collect cookbooks and this would be amazing to have in my tiny Manhattan kitchen!
    Thanks Alex!

  • I have a son who is mildly autistic. I want to go gluten-free and casien-free for him, but it can be a huge challenge to find good recipes that are easy. I’m pretty new to cooking and baking, and I get overwhelmed easily. I would love to take up a vegan diet as well, but my husband is such a skeptic.
    Thanks so much!

  • I too would love a copy of this cookbook. I grew up baking pies and cakes all the time but the development of concious eating in my life (which I am so thankful for) has curtailed my own baking, especially as I have developed a senstivity to wheat. I would love to learn new ways of re-introducing healthy and easy baking methods back into my life, that would evoke my childhood and, hopefully, win over the rest of my baking family!

  • Comment by Christa — February 2, 2010 @ 12:36 pm
  • I’ve been starting to think that my son may have a gluten intolerance, but it’s difficult to get an 18-year-old boy to cut out gluten – esp. since he went vegetarian about a year ago and is now leaning toward becoming a vegan. I’ve been vegan for 16 years… but have not experiented much with gluten-free cooking/baking. If you only have one copy – it sounds like Jessica should get it (go vegan!), but if you have another one – I would definitely put it to good use :-)

  • I would really love a copy of this book for a friend of mine. She’s been so wonderful to me, and I don’t have the financial resources to pay her back. She has a lot of food allergies, and it would be nice for her to be able to have some treats once in a while!

  • This would be so helpful to us. My wonderful hubby is in the fight of his life against cancer. As I carefully swing our household to increasingly vegetarian, and ultimately vegan way of living, this would be a great asset to cooking things that are yummy and healthy!

  • I have been vegan for over two years. I am still conflicted when faced with providing a “dessert” for bridge or other special occasions. I have concluded that I am not being authentic to provide something I don’t feel good eating myself. Yet I do want to offer something others enjoy- even if they don’t know what it contains-or doesn’t contain. This cookbook looks like it would have answers for me.

  • I would love to give this book to my friend who has started a gluten-free diet to help combat her MS symptoms. She’s very scared to venture in this direction and feels she will be limited in her life and diet. I would love to prove to her that a gluten-free lifestyle will not only benefit her and her health but is also extremely easy and delicious.

  • Comment by Kristen — February 2, 2010 @ 1:26 pm
  • Wow! My mother has Celiac Disease, while I am trying to eat mostly vegan. I wanted to convince her to do the same, but she is apprehensive about it because so many foods that are vegan are made with wheat gluten and non-Celiac-friendly foods. This would be a great help for both her and myself in making that transition!

  • Comment by Melonie — February 2, 2010 @ 1:28 pm
  • I love to bake and I’ve experimented with gluten free and vegan recipes. Unfortunately, not many have turned out to taste very good. I’d love to try a book like this that has been recommended. I have a few friends who can’t eat gluten and they would appreciate being taste testers!

  • I would be so thrilled to receive a copy of this book. I’ve been able to keep most refined sugars and high fructose corn syrup out of my 2 1/2 yr old’s diet but am beginning to suspect that gluten is causing some allergic reactions as well. She abides by a 90% vegan diet by her own accord. She has no taste for meats and cheeses but is an absolute carb junkie. Soo, I’d LOVE to learn some fun and nutritious gluten free recipes so my little girl can have her cake and eat it too! It’s on my wishlist and I really look forward to checking out this book!

  • I just wanted to direct a comment to Kristen, who’s friend has MS and is leary of gluten free diet?

When I eat gluten in any form anymore, all major weight bearing joints esp my feet, hip bones (side) and tendons on side of knee, kneeds are so swollen, stiff & sore I can barely walk. I have symptoms ranging from brain fog, to moodiness besides the usual digestive symptoms.

Please tell your friend Kirsten that I have ready on Many many glutenfree/celiac groups people with MS can have improvement by following the gluten free diet even if they are not celiac. But please urge her most strenuously to be tested first! If she goes gluten free before testing it will make it extremely difficult if not impossible for testing to be accurate. (that’s what happened to me)

(note to the one approving this- if this is too personal and too lengthy and please feel free to either just delete without posting or you can pass this note to the person’s email whatever is right for the blog- and thank you for this information you send!) Cynthia

  • I have been on an elimination diet for the last 5 weeks and am finding that i have allergies to dairy, wheat and gluten. I do have 1 or 2 recipes to curve my “sweet-tooth”, but recipes for baked goods can be hard to find. Having a cookbook that can teach me recipes not only for myself but also for my family to love would be a wonderful tool.

  • I would be excited to receive a copy of this cookbook. I have recently started back on a vegan diet, after being diagnosed with Lupus in April 2009. I had a handle on it about 9 years ago and fully believe if I’d stayed on the vegan plan I would not have the health problems I have today. I’ve had Fibromyalgia for years and when I was on the Vegan diet all my joint pain went away. Was feeling really good. Due to 3 deaths in the family, taking care of estates etc., I caved in and went back to my old eating habits. Put myself last once again.
The doctors took me off of wheat, gluten and dairy after the Lupus diagnosis. I can find lots of Vegan baking recipes, but very hard to find Vegan & Gluten/Wheat Free recipes! My Rheumatologist just chuckled when I told him I was going back on the Vegan Diet. He told me there was “no diet” that would help Lupus. Well, he just gave me the ammo to prove him wrong. I’m already starting to feel some “energy” which I hadn’t felt in the past 2 years. :)

Bless you for all the good information you provide.

  • I would love this book. My husband and I are both gluten free. Because of a lot of other food sensitivities and an allergy to egg, it has been necessary to make many of our things from scratch at home. It is difficult to find prepared foods both gluten free and egg free. This vegan cookbook would be an encouragement to us. Thanks!

  • I’m plan to devote a future issue of my newsletter, http://www.healthy-gourmet.org, to vegetarian diet. This book, (as well as Alexandra’s books!) are those I’m considering recommending in that issue. My readers include vegans, those who want to avoid gluten for health reasons, and those who prefer eating vegan for ethical reasons. I also get notes from parents who want tasty vegan friendly desserts for their children.

  • I have been mostly a vegetarian for about 40 years. Just reciently I made the transition to mostly vegan. October 18th to be exact.I am now learning how to cook without eggs and dairy. Boy, do I seriously need help! Baking is a major problem without dairy and eggs. I have at least 80 pounds to lose, and would like to learn how to lose it healthfully. I have baked for years mostly breads and the sinful sweet breads and cookies during the holidays. I really want to not only eat healthy, but when I bake goodies, I want them to be healthful and delicious. In other words I do not want to give away unhealthy things, like I have for years. Thanks for considering my request.

  • One of the most delicious baking recipes I have is vegan, indeed it’s Alex’s chocolate cupcakes from The Great American Detox Diet, so I’d definitely like to find out more about vegan baking.

Incidentally, the frosting used in the cupcake recipe can double as chocolate truffles – just let the tofu/melted chocolate/maple syrup mixture harden enough to shape into balls, then roll them in cocoa powder – amazing!

  • It’s funny how the universe drops things into your lap just when you need them. I would love, love, love to win a copy of this book.

My daughter (age 25 months) is a self-selected vegan. We eat a mostly vegan diet at home, and even when we’re out she wants nothing to do with anything animal. Last week we learned that she’s also highly sensitive to gluten and so now not only are we learning how to cook for a vegan toddler, but also now a gluten-free vegan toddler. She’s such an inspiration and her chosen health path is helping us to get healthy too!

This book would b so great for expanding my culinary horizons! Having a few more baked goods that I could offer at meal time, snack time and especially to send with her to school would be so wonderful.

This book would provide so many more options and a way to introduce new and exciting ways to others to adopt other eating habits for the best feelings of healthy we all deserve.

  • Hi Alex,
I was so excited to hear about this cookbook. It’s so hard to find books that are both vegan and gluten free. I’ve been vegan for a while, and been trying to move towards limiting gluten as well, as sensitivity runs in my family. I just discovered that I’m pregnant, and now have even more reason to need this book! I’ll be craving lots of treats and comfort foods, and how great to be able to make them healthy!

  • Comment by Shannon — February 3, 2010 @ 7:12 pm
  • The books sounds great! You have been inspiring to me. I am making the transition to vegan because of digestive issues with meat and dairy. I am trying this lifestyle change as an alternative to the surgical route to handle my health concerns. Thank you for being available to us! This book would be a great addition to my growing but new library of vegan books!

  • Comment by Stefanie — February 3, 2010 @ 7:35 pm
  • I’d be really interested in this cookbook, as I am looking for *good* alternatives to the mainstream flour/sugar baking. I am sensitive to wheat (and I suspect my kids are too) and I’d love to find some good recipes for swapping out the traditional fare. Thanks!
